Assessing for Trauma at Intake & Beyond

This highly interactive Workshop will provide a unique opportunity for mental health professionals to discuss the universal themes, challenges & problems that arise around how to assessing for trauma at Intake and beyond.
As avoidance is the primary symptoms of trauma, it can be quite challenging to assess and diagnose clients. It is not just client avoidance that gets in the way of diagnosis (and treatment), clinicians' counter-transference and apprehensiion is also a factor.
Mental health professionals are often worried about discussing or inquring about trauma for fear of overwhelming and /or re-traumatizing clients. As such, crucial time goes by before clients receive the appropriate treatment & relief for they symptoms. This workshop will provide mental health workers with the information and tools they need to understand how trauma presents and best practice methods for exploring pertinent history in a manner that will not overwhelm nor do harm to clients.

Course Objectives

1. participants will be able to conduct an assessing and diagnosing trauma without overwhelming, doing harm and /or "re-traumatizing" clients.

2. participants will be taught how identify and resolve client avoidance as it creates a challenge toward assessing and diagnosing trauma throughout treatment.

Participants will recognize counter-transference and avoidance in their own work which prevents an obstacle to diagnosing and treating trauma in clients.
