Course Description
This course is based on SAMSHA TIP 54: Managing Chronic Pain in Adults With or in Recovery From Substance Use Disorders.
Designed to bridge the gap between research and the practical needs of clinicians and administrators serving people in need of behavioral health services. It emphasizes the importance of a comprehensive approach to treating patients with chronic noncancer pain (CNCP) and substance use disorder (SUD), considering both physiological and psychological aspects of these conditions.
Course Objectives
- Introduction to Chronic Pain and Substance Use Disorders: Understanding the impact, audience, purpose, and basic definitions related to chronic pain and addiction
- Assessment of Patients: Tools and strategies for assessing pain, function, and substance use disorders
- Chronic Pain Management: Overview of pain management techniques, including nonpharmacological treatments and opioid therapy
- Managing Addiction Risk in Patients Treated with Opioids: Strategies for promoting adherence, assessing drug-related behaviors, and discontinuing opioid therapy if necessary
- Patient Education: Importance of educating patients about pain treatment options, including the use of linguistically appropriate materials and the inclusion of families and caregivers
