Class Description
If you work as a therapist or other mental health clinician, it’s likely you frequently encounter anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Research supports multiple types of CBT therapies to address such symptoms. This course will provide an overview of commonly used CBT strategies and interactive elements to reinforce each lesson. These methods are appropriate for adults as well as older children and teens. The presenter will start with the basics, such as the CBT triangle, and work into more advanced strategies, such as using cognitive restructuring to challenge shame and doubt, which fuel PTSD symptoms. Exposure techniques for general anxiety and phobias will also be covered. These tools can further expand your practice, and will provide a great introduction for those interested in specializing in anxiety and/or PTSD. - Effectively use the CBT triangle in client sessions - Challenge a basic negative thought using CBT strategies - Incorporate basic mind-body techniques into CBT sessions - Use Socratic questioning to challenge cognitive distortions relating to trauma - Understand the use of gradual exposure for anxiety and avoidance Jennie Lannette, MSW, LCSW, runs a private practice in mid-Missouri. In the past, she’s worked at inpatient state hospital settings, in community mental health clinics, and as an EAP provider. She’s trained extensively to apply CBT therapies for children and adults with PTSD. She is regularly featured as a writer and expert through local media and national wellness sites such as Psychology Today and Psych Central. She also holds a journalism degree and runs her own site called The Counseling Palette. She recently published the book, Finding Peace from PTSD, available on Amazon.
