Class Description

Course Description Children and adolescents sometimes face stressors related to school. For family caregivers, navigating the school landscape and supporting their students can be a large source of stress. Clinicians and other providers are often tasked with helping children, adolescents, and parents navigate school services and supports, and deal with school-related challenges and stressors. This training will provide a framework to navigate school-based supports, resources, and services geared to support children and adolescents, as well as family caregivers. In addition, strategies and tools to help parents and other family caregivers support kids in school will be provided. This training will focus on providing tools and knowledge to help kids and families navigate and advocate within the school landscape. Course Objectives Articulate sources of stress, frustration, and anxiety experienced by both kids and families as it pertains to the school setting Develop an understanding of the school landscape of services and supports Develop a knowledge base and strategies to support school-age children and adolescents Articulate supports to offer parents and other family caregivers to support children and adolescents in school About the Instructor Dr. Christina Marsack-Topolewski- LMSW is an associate professor of Social Work in the College of Health and Human Services at Eastern Michigan University. She received a bachelor’s of science in Special Education, specializing in Cognitive Impairments, from Wayne State University. She trained under a specialized fellowship at the University of Michigan, receiving her master’s in Social Work and specializing in both school social work and aging from the University of Michigan. Dr. Marsack-Topolewski received her PhD in Social Work with a dual title in Gerontology from Wayne State University. She has worked with individuals with various intellectual and developmental disabilities for over 20 years. Her research focuses on individuals with IDDs, their caregivers, caregiver burden and quality of life, advance care planning, service delivery, and service utilization. She has over 70 publications in national and international journals and encyclopedias, mainly focusing on individuals with IDDs, caregiving, and aging. In addition, she has presented her work locally, nationally, and internationally. Dr. Marsack-Topolewski has been the lead on multiple grant-funded programs tailoring services to individuals with IDDs

  • What platform will the class be held on?
    The class will take place on Zoom.
  • What will be my method of communication with the lecturer?
    You are able to interact with the lecturer by using the chat function or verbally (if you have a working microphone).
  • How do I get my CE certificate?
    In order to get your CE certificate, you must complete the course survey. You will have access to the course survey five minutes before the Zoom session ends. Once you complete the course survey, your course completion code will be emailed to you.
