Class Description

Course Description This course provides social workers with essential skills in client-centered crisis management and de-escalation techniques. Focusing on practical strategies and empathetic communication, participants will learn how to assess and respond to clients in crisis while maintaining safety, dignity, and respect. The course covers key approaches such as active listening, emotional regulation, and the use of de-escalation tactics to diffuse high-stress situations. By the end, social workers will build their ability to navigate complex scenarios, reduce tension, and support clients in regaining stability and participants feel equipped to handle crisis situations effectively and ethically. Course Objectives Understand the Phases of a Crisis: Identify key signs that a crisis is escalating and how to respond at each stage Implement strategies to proactively prevent crises from occurring Ability to demonstrate effective verbal and non-verbal communication skills for de-escalating tense or high-risk situations Include Trauma-Informed Care and Anti-Oppressive De-Escalation practices in your approach Recognize and address the impact of systemic oppression, bias, and power imbalances in crisis situations Identify common mistakes or harmful actions to avoid during a crisis Identify Self-Care and Reflective Practices in Crisis Management About the Instructor Denisse is a therapist in the only LGBTQ-specific group home program in New York City, where she has worked for several years. As this role lands on many systemic intersections, Denisse has been able to develop a wide range of knowledge on the child welfare system in NYC, transgender-related healthcare processes, and housing and education advocacy. While doing this work, Denisse has continued her education and experience by participating in and presenting at TGNC-specific programs and professional conferences.

    In order to get your CE certificate, you must complete the course survey. You will have access to the course survey five minutes before the Zoom session ends. Once you complete the course survey, your course completion code will be emailed to you.
