Class Description

Grief Myths & Misconceptions vs Facts - II will examine the concept of Personal Death Awareenss (PDA) & its impact on grief counseling. We will identify grief's theoretical framework & using case studies, apply intenventions to develop grief treatment plans. We will review skills & strategies for clinicans to help clients identfy & process their grief emotions, beliefs & thoughts while holding space, leaning in & sitting with the discomfort of a griever's pain. Grief tools will include: Personal Death Awareness, Inventory of Losses, Daily Grief Monitoring Diary, Managing Difficult Moments, Dual Process Model - Loss Orientation vs Life Reconstruction, Assumptive World exercise, Types of Grievers, Support System Invetory, Continued Bonds & Meaning Making opportunities. Objectives: 1.) Identify grief myths & misconceptions vs facts. 2.) Explore evidenced-based research on loss & grief. 3.) Identify automatic thoughts, core beliefs, schemas, and cognitive distortions. 4.) Recall three empirically validated CBT Interventions to address addictive behaviors. 5.) Name three ways to dispute clients’ irrational and self-critical thoughts. 6.) Recall three CBT skills needed to monitor their thoughts when developing self-critical and irrational thoughts. Instructors: Gae Savino, LCSW, CT is a licensed clinical social worker and a grief counselor Certified in Thanatology (CT), the study of death, dying and bereavement by the Association for Death Education and Counseling. Gae earned her Master's Degree in Social Work from Fordham University and has post-graduate training in complicated grief treatment at The Center for Complicated Grief at Columbia. Gae is a workshop presenter on issues of loss, death, dying and bereavement, complicated grief, and the multifaceted grief/bereavement impact of COVID-19. spousal/partner, and parent loss. Linnie Pickering, LMSW received her BA in English from the University of Pennsylvania and her master's degree in social work from Columbia University. She is a specialist in the prevention of domestic violence, child abuse, suicide, and sexual assault. She did post-graduate training at Columbia University's Center for Complicated Grief, and her focus is now on issues related to loss, grief, death, dying and bereavement, complicated grief, and the multifaceted grief/bereavement impact of COVID-19.
