Class Description

Course Description This training course provides a framework to understand the nature and derivation of pain. A special focus will be devoted to varying understandings of pain, options for assessing pain, and treatment options. Co-occurring, comorbid conditions will be discussed with an emphasis on at-risk populations who may experience chronic pain. Supports, interventions, and strategies will be discussed aimed to improve quality of life and enhance comfort for people living with chronic pain. Course Objectives Recognize multiple understandings and frameworks of pain and the derivation of pain Describe chronic pain and the impact on clients Explain different treatment options and strategies to support individuals living with chronic pain Understand the inter-related and co-occurring nature of pain with other physical and mental health conditions About the Instructor Dr. Christina Marsack-Topolewski- LMSW is an associate professor of Social Work in the College of Health and Human Services at Eastern Michigan University. She received a bachelor’s of science in Special Education, specializing in Cognitive Impairments, from Wayne State University. She trained under a specialized fellowship at the University of Michigan, receiving her master’s in Social Work and specializing in both school social work and aging from the University of Michigan. Dr. Marsack-Topolewski received her PhD in Social Work with a dual title in Gerontology from Wayne State University. She has worked with individuals with various intellectual and developmental disabilities for over 20 years. Her research focuses on individuals with IDDs, their caregivers, caregiver burden and quality of life, advance care planning, service delivery, and service utilization. She has over 70 publications in national and international journals and encyclopedias, mainly focusing on individuals with IDDs, caregiving, and aging. In addition, she has presented her work locally, nationally, and internationally. Dr. Marsack-Topolewski has been the lead on multiple grant-funded programs tailoring services to individuals with IDDs, older adults, and chronic illnesses. In 2019, she was appointed to the National Task Group on Intellectual Disability and Dementia Practices. She serves as both a board member and co-chair of Membership Affairs.

  • How do I get my CE certificate?
    In order to get your CE certificate, you must complete the course survey. You will have access to the course survey five minutes before the Zoom session ends. Once you complete the course survey, your course completion code will be emailed to you.
